Education Day – Coaching the Female Client

As the healthcare landscape evolves, understanding and addressing the unique needs of female clients is crucial for promoting holistic well-being. Our Education Day brings together leading experts, including a dietitian, pelvic floor physiotherapist, exercise physiologist, occupational therapist, and a Doctor of Chinese medicine. Each presenter will share their expertise, providing valuable insights into working with female clients across various life stages.

Presenters

1. Sydney Wright – Registered Dietitian

Bio: Sydney (she/her) is a non-diet Registered Dietitian and full-time MSW student at the University of Calgary. She has been working in the field of disordered eating/eating disorders since she graduated in the spring of 2020, and is currently on her way to becoming Saskatchewan’s only dual licensed social worker and dietitian. Sydney practices from a weight-inclusive, anti-oppressive framework, and she currently works in private practice at Food to Fit Nutrition Inc. in Regina and at BridgePoint Center forEating Disorder Recovery in Milden, SK. She is passionate about body liberation, food sovereignty, and reclaiming the joy of nourishing yourself that diet culture too often takes from us.

2. Leah White – MPT

Bio: Leah White holds a Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) from the University of Saskatchewan (2010) and a Bachelor of Kinesiology (BKin) from the University of Regina (2008). She has specialized training to work with female pelvic health clients and with pediatric clients who have bowel and bladder concerns. She also sees clients with musculoskeletal injuries, sports injuries, and post operative rehabilitation. She is certified in Medical Acupuncture and is a Certified Women’s Health and Pre and Postnatal Coach.

Presentation: “Female Pelvic Health Across the Lifespan and Considerations for Exercise”. This presentation will delve in into the anatomy, function, and importance of the female pelvic floor. It will touch on the factors that can influence the function of the pelvic floor across the lifespan. Participants will learn about some common signs and symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction and how exercise can be adjusted to accommodate these changes. Exercise professionals will also learn how to screen for these with their clients, so they have a better understanding of when a client should be referred for further evaluation.

3. Lindsay Roysum – Occupational Therapist

Bio: Lindsay Roysum has been practicing as an occupational therapist for 18 years. She treats all ages and stages of people with a focus on achieving goals in everyday life. She is certified in cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, concussion rehabilitation, and has a special interest in nervous system regulation.

Presentation: Treating today’s Woman. Focusing interventions on self-care including habits and routines.

4. Kiley Bourns, BSc, CSEP-CEP

Bio: Kiley was born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan.  After high school graduation, she attended Montana State University where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology.  Upon graduation, Kiley became certified as an Exercise Physiologist with the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology.  The lure of the mountains and sports that were readily available fit well with her athletic pursuits kept her in Montana for 7 years before returning to Saskatchewan.  A mother of 2 beautiful girls, owner of Stapleford Health and Rehab Clinic, athletic dabbler who has a lifelong passion of helping others find their “best self”.  Her experience spans over 30 years of dedication to a wide range of clients of all ages from professional athletes to those struggling with orthopedic injuries.  Kiley is committed to maintaining current with the needs of her clients by ever evolving personally and professionally by continuing to learn as she “grows up”.

5. Dr. Tricia Miller – Dr. Ac.

Bio: Dr. Miller graduated from the Grant MacEwan University Acupuncture program with Distinction in 2011. She began her acupuncture career doing a lot of work with fertility and stress related issues at a clinic in Sherwood Park, Alberta. She then moved to the Okanagan and for 8 years and worked with injury and pain management for conditions like arthritis, back pain, sciatica, and pre and post-surgical pain. She continued her work with women’s health but shifted into pregnancy treatments like labor induction and turning breeched babies as well as menstrual issues. In 2020, Dr. Miller moved back to her home province of Saskatchewan and throughout the past few years has developed a practice of continuing to treat women’s health, pain management and circled back to treating many stress related issues that arose and worsened with the pandemic. Her acupuncture sessions are designed to help the patient rest to regulate the nervous system and gain a remembered sense of well-being.

Pain relief is often experienced with just one session. Dr. Miller considers it extremely important to educate her patients on how Traditional Chinese Acupuncture works and why it can be so beneficial to one’s overall health to include the treatments in your healthcare options. Dr. Miller is also a very experienced yoga practitioner and instructor.

She is the only Certified Iyengar Yoga teacher in Southern Saskatchewan. After being a dedicated student for 10 years, she completed her national teaching assessment in Ottawa in 2015. She continues to study with her own teacher in Goa, India as well as with her peers at the Iyengar Yoga Centre Victoria, BC. She is a hockey mom to one teenage boy and a very busy dog mom to one adorable Lab/husky cross. She feels very fortunate to have created a balanced life centered around yoga and Chinese medicine.

Presentation: “Working with female clients: understanding the actions of emotions and hormones”. Getting into the some of the complexity around estrogen and its effects in menopausal women.
